House. C17 origin, mainly early C18. Late C19 rear range. Clunch, cased in
red brick, with clunch dressings, to north west end of front range. Red
brick, also with clunch dressings to south east end of front range and
stairway and office extension at rear. Tiled roof with rebuilt end parapets
and end stacks. The ridge stack associated with the late C17 - early C18
house has been removed. L-plan. Two storeys and attic framed by rusticated
quoins and divided by plat band. The north west end of the front range is
earlier with some repaired brickwork. Two recessed hung sashes, probably
early C19, in original flat arches of clunch with raised key block. Two
similar windows at ground floor. Probably in c.1731 (the date of fire
insurance policy with Sun Insurance Company - see plaque on front wall), the
house was remodelled. The front range was extended to south east. Two flush
frame hung sashes to each storey. Doorway, originally further to north west
of front wall, placed near the centre of the facade. Three steps lead up to
panelled door in moulded architrave with rectangular fanlight and
intersecting glazing bars. The staircase and a former office range were
added also in c.1731, at the rear. Red brick, now rendered, under a lean-to,
pantiled roof. The original service wing was rebuilt late C19. There is a
late C17 red brick ridge stack between the front and rear wings. Interior:
Late C17 house has clunch walls cased in red brick. The walls are of greater
depth than those of the c.1731 red brick additions. There are abutting
hearths serving front and rear rooms. There is an original stop chamfered
main beam in the room at the front. Typical late C17 purlin roof with the
purl in tenoned to the principal rafter. c.1731 extension includes open-well
staircase with landing. Closed-string with column-on-vase balusters, moulded
rail and square newels. One first floor room has sunk panelling remaining
and there is a cornice in a ground floor room which is also C18. The office
at the rear of the house, added c.1731, has a small corner fireplace with C19
cast iron gate. Several other fireplaces are of the C19.
