(West Side)
13/38 No. 5
GV II
House and shops, early C16. Four bays surviving from a row of
early C16 shops with jettied first floor halls above. The
timber framing is visible externally in the right hand gable end
and shows the close studding. The front wall is cased in brick
and the jetty is underbuilt also in brick. Steeply pitched roof
now covered with asbestos tiles. Two storeys. The fenestration
and doorways are all C20. Interior. In four bays and a
narrower bay, probably for a passage. The floor framing has
early C16 double cyma moulding to all the main beams, except for
those to the passageway which are unmoulded. At first floor,
the posts have jowled heads, and upward bracing to the tie beams
which are chamfered and stopped. The first floor was originally
open to the roof. The posts have thickened heads and upward
bracing to the tie beams which are chamfered and stopped. There
is no evidence of any of the trusses being closed, except for
the mortices in the tie beams to the narrow through-passage
bay. The roof is of tenoned side purlin construction with the
purlins in line. There are pairs of curved wind braces from the
principal rafters to the purlin. The principal rafters are
joined by collars and are halved and pegged at the apex. There
is no evidence of smoke blackening. The halls were probably
heated by side stacks which have since been removed.
