Adjoining South end of Merton Hall; late C12 or early C13, 2 storeys, stone
rubble with Barnack dressings; modern tile roof. Rectangular building,
probably built as Manor House, with vaulted undercroft and Hall on upper
floor. The undercroft vault has gone and a modern floor has been substituted.
The building, which appears to have been at one time derelict, has been
reroofed. Some old windows of various dates and some original buttresses
remain. The original features which survive have all been mutilated, refaced
or rebuilt. The building remains important as one of the very few domestic
buildings of this date surviving in the country. (RCHM 292).
