23.6.52 The Manor House
II
House, late C16 or early C17 with C19 alterations to the facade. Plan of hall range
with crosswings. Mainly of narrow, local brick, English bond. C19 slate roofs with
repaired parapetted gables and stone coping and ball finials. Two fine original
projecting side stacks, one to the west crosswing and the other to the rear of the
hall range, both with two octagonal shafts with rubbed brick strings. The east
crosswing has tumbling to the rear gable end and a side stack with two diagonally set
shafts. Two storeys with attics to the crosswings and bands between storeys. Each
gable end has one eliptical window to the attic storey, two cross frame casements and
at the ground floor a bay window. Hall range of two storeys. Three similar casements
and the doorway, with an early C19 radial fanlight in a round-headed arch is placed
off centre and is possibly on the site of the original entry to the through passage.
Inside the floor framing is exposed to the hall and crosswings. Unmoulded joists,
laid flat and main beams of substantial scantling. Some heraldic stained glass in a
window in the east crosswing is probably C19 or C20 and refers to the Wood family.
