CRESSING LANHAM GREEN ROAD
TL 72 SE (west side)
1/57 No. 1, Red Lion
Cottages
GV II
House. Circa 1600, altered in early C19 and C20. Timber framed, roughcast
rendered, roofed with handmade red plain tiles. 2 bays aligned NE-SW. Early C19
stack to NW of SW bay, and 2 other cottages (nos. 2 and 3) beyond, not included
in this item. C20 external stack at NE end, and single-storey extension beyond,
c.1952. 2 storeys. The SW elevation has one early C19 sash of 16 lights on
each floor, and a C20 half-glazed door. The SE elevation (facing the street)
has one C20 casement. The SW bay has a lodged axial beam, chamfered with lamb's
tongue stops, and plain joists of horizontal section; C20 grate. The NE bay has
plain joists of horizontal section arranged longitudinally, with a blocked stair
trap; at the NE end the joists have been raised to level the floor. C18/19
plain battened internal doors. One C17 moulded 3-plank door on first floor,
possibly original to this building, meriting special care. (C.A. Hewett,
English Historic Carpentry, 1980, 224, left illustration). The NW wallplate has
a square groove for sliding shutters. Wall framing concealed by interior and
exterior plaster, but probably raised. Roof of clasped purlin construction.
Formerly a public house or beerhouse named The Red Lion.
