House, divided into 4 dwellings. C16 or earlier, altered in C20. Timber
framed, plastered and weatherboarded, roofed with handmade red clay tiles. Main
range of 3 bays aligned NE-SW with axial stack at NE end, and late C16 3-bay
crosswing beyond, extending to NW. Single-storey lean-to extension in W angle.
At the S corner this house meets another smaller house extending to the SE,
comprising a 'Unit System' pair (No. 1, Sim's Cottage, item 1/109, q.v.).
C19/C20 extension in the W angle between them, the whole forming a Z-plan.
External stack at SW end, and C20 single-storey lean-to extension beyond. Main
range of 2 storeys, crosswing of 2 storeys with attics. NE elevation (to
Braintree Road), one C20 casement on ground floor, and on first floor late C17
'Ipswich' window with 2 wrought iron casements and rectangular leading. C20
door. Panel of late C17 pargetting in high relief, of conventional foliage and
scrolls, much restored in C20. On NW of crosswing, projecting gable, the
bressumer carved with spiral leaf design, carved pendants and hanging brackets,
infilled with weatherboarding. Scattered fenestration on this elevation, with 3
C20 doors. The SE gable also projects, with a carved bressumer (much weathered),
exposed close studding, high collar and clasped purlins. The remainder of this
elevation is weatherboarded. 6 grouped round shafts, of which 4 are fluted,
rebuilt at top. Sprockets below eaves.
