1/112 Ancillary building
approx. 6 metres south
of Russell's Farmhouse
GV II
Ancillary building of uncertain purpose, possibly a granary. Early C16, altered
in C17. Timber framed, weatherboarded, roofed with handmade red clay tiles. 2
bays facing NW. Single-storey extension to front with catslide roof. Lean-to
extension at right end and enclosing C17 wood-burning hearth, chimney
demolished. 2 storeys. Jowled posts, heavy studding with 'Suffolk' bracing
trenched to the outside. Chamfered binding beam with step stops. Plain joists
of horizontal section jointed to it with soffit tenons with diminished haunches.
2 blocked unglazed windows, each complete with 3 diamond mullions, in upper
storey of rear wall. Crownpost roof with axial bracing. A building of high
quality and unusual type. The proximity to the farmhouse tends to confirm its
original purpose as a granary.
