Former Public House, early C14 and early C19. Two storey, timber framed and
plastered with gabled peg tile roof on front. Rear shows 2 gabled wings and
large, single storey, peg tile roofed rear extension. Front to High Street has
3 gabled dormers with casements with scalloped bargeboards and C19 crested ridge
tiles. 1st floor has 4 small pane C20 casements. Off-centre early C19
doorcase with fluted half columns, flat hood and parallel frieze. Surrounding
this, a shopfront like arrangement with 7 Doric pilasters enclosing C20 small
panes windows. Former jetty indicated by curved, soffitted overhang on S end to
alleyway. Formerly 2 crosswings, the one to the S being jettied on S,E and W
sides with curved dragonposts partly exposed. Unusual crown post roof with
jowled crown post and down braces. Thick multiple bracing on S ground floor
wall. N crosswing is probably former pair of C14 shops and has soot blackened
crown post of E C14 form with chamfered post, thick straightish braces, down
bracing to tie beam and splayed scarf joint. Roof rebuilt at front in early
C19. (RCHM 17.)
