Arched gateway, walls, end piers and gates. 1815 by Ignatius Bonomi for John
Lambton, later 1st Earl of Durham. Walls extended in mid C19. Ashlar sandstone.
Classical style.
Tall imposing gateway: semicircular arch, with archivolt and corniced imposts,
framed by Tuscan pilasters; entablature has frieze with raised oblong panel in
moulded surround flanked by carved stone rams' heads (Lambton insignia);
blocking course breaks forward at ends. Flanking lower piers each with raised
fielded panel, cornice and enriched S-scroll bracket. Pair of tall iron gates
have close-set bars and dogbars with spike finials; each leaf has narrow margin
of small cross-braced panels.
1.75-metre high convex quadrant walls, flanking gateway, have plinths and
chamfered copings. Extension walls with flat coping run to square-plan end
piers with low pyramidal caps.
