Former gate lodge to Castle Eden Estate, with gate piers and tower to left;
c.1800 by William Atkinson. Limestone ashlar; lodge roof not visible.
Lodge: asymmetrical with 2-storey, one-bay tower enclosed to left and rear by
one-storey L-plan wing. Gothick with chamfered plinth, hoodmoulds and embattled
parapets. Tower section has 2-light pointed-arched window with Gothick glazing
bars and similar single-light window above; semi-octagonal gate pier respond to
left; right return with similar windows and tall stepped octagonal stack to rear.
Lower wing has former doorway to left with raised shield above; lancets to rear.
Octagonal piers, about 2.5 metres high, have concave-sided capitals and low
pyramidal caps; gates missing. 4.5-metre high, square gate tower at far left
has embattled parapets, gate pier respond on right return and blocked lancet to
rear.
C20 additions to left of lodge and C20 embattled wall of concrete, running west
from gate tower, not of special interest.
