Country house - progressively enlarged from a simple farmhouse. C17 origin,
enlarged at rear and to right in C18 and C19. Irregular plan. Original block
has rubble stone walls, stone slate roof with central lead flat, brick end stacks,
2 storeys and attic. Central C18 raised panel door in classical surround with
pilasters, pediment and fanlight with intersecting glazing - all restored. This
flanked by 2 sashes with glazing bars. On each side, a C20 canted flat-roofed
bay window with cornice, and metal casements on each floor. Between these, on
first floor, 3 C20 metal casements. Attic has 4 shallow gabled dormers with
sashes with glazing bars. C18 addition at rear, creating double-pile plan. Right
of the original block a small 2-storey flat roofed block. Right of this a C18
wing, of brick, with 1/2-hipped tiled roof with stone eaves courses. 2 storeys and
attic. C20 stone porch with stone slate roof and ledged door. Right of the porch
a single-storey extension with stone slate hipped roof. In this wing, ground floor
has 3 sashes with glazing bars. 6 similar sashes on first floor. Right of this
wing a late C18 - early C19 range of one storey and attic. Right end of this now
used as garage. Ground floor has 4 sashes with glazing bars. Attic has 4 hipped
dormers, 3 with sashes, one with casements. At rear of house, at left end, a
large C19 extension of 2 storeys. Pump on right end wall, dated 1833. Interior
much altered, but retains an early C19 cut string stair with simple shaped
spandrels and wreathed handrail. In C19 block, main ground floor room has good
ornamental plaster cornice and marble fireplace surround. (RCHM, Monument 146.
