Lion Gate

- II
Gateway. c1840. Stucco. A Roman arch; a symmetrical design with detached
coupled columns in front of pilasters, set against a solid core, from which
the arch springs, with keystone and impost band. The Ionic Order has simple
bold mouldings, and each pair of plain columns stands on a single pedestal;
the entablature supports a blocking course, broken above the columns and
having a raised platform in the centre, with the figure of a lion. At each
side of the structure is a flanking wall, with plain piers at each end. The
gates (1862) are of cast iron, with elaborate ornament. The structure has
the same form on its front (north east) and rear elevations. RCHM
