II

Large country house, now divided in 2 units. 1904 by Fairfax B. Wade, in a
free William and Mary style. Red brick with orange dressings; rendered
panels between head and cills of windows; tile hipped roof with extended
brick end stacks. 2 storeys and attics. Plinth, giant pilaster panels,
wood modillion eaves cornice and 6 dormers the outer pairs hipped,
central pair flat headed. Entrance front: 3 central bays project with
further projection in central bay which includes pediment gabled stair
tower; central bay panelled through 3 storeys with recessed dressed arch
above triple keystone. 2 storey octagonal wood oriel with rendered panels
between first and attic floors. 9 bays, cross casements in outer 3 bays
on each side six light casements flanking central bays. All leaded.
Recessed arched entrance with large recessed open segmental pediment,
infilled at sides and panelled. Panelled double doors, latticed over
light and sidelights; brick centre supporting pediment. The whole flanked on
either side by small one storey projecting pavillions. Garden front in
similar style with projecting wings. Interior:- return staircase in
panelled well with barley sugar balusters. B.O.E. (Berks) p.66. V.C.H. Vol.III p.202.
