Hall house, now farmhouse. Late C14, altered and extended Cl7, C18, Cl9 and C20. Part timber
frame mostly encased in brick, partly rendered, part brick partly tile-hung. Tiled gabled roof of
different heights. Originally L-plan of 3x2 framed bays with 2 framed bay hall on east, one framed
bay cross-passage on west of hall and 2 framed bay solar on west of cross-passage. Early C19
extension on west of solar. 2 storeys and attic. 3 chimneys with clay pots. Entrance (north)
front: former hall section on left; former gabled solar crosswing and larger gabled Cl9 extension
on right. Small lean-to extensions at each end. Left section has the remaining part of the
original hall window on the first floor, of 3-lights, altered, with glazing bars added, the 2 outer
lights having 4-centred heads. To the right of this is an early C20, 2-light casement. On the
ground floor, a C20 2-light casement on left and a C20 lean-to porch enclosing a C20 entrance door.
On the right, 2 gables of one bay each, with 3-light C19 casement windows with glazing bars, the
ground floor windows with mullions and transoms; small enclosed porch in centre with plain door,
now disused. Large chimney on internal angle. Gable end on east is of old brick in English bond.
Interior: very fine timber frame visible in roof of former hall, smoke blackened with original
smoke louvres in roof. 3 wide roof trusses with very large chamfered arch braces to chamfered tie
beam; chamfered arched collars clasping side purlins; chamfered wall plates with plain stops.
Chamfered jowled posts with roll-moulded shaft and moulded capital, on middle truss. Original hall
window in 2nd bay, the bead visible in attic; oak frame of 3 lights with hollow chamfers on
mullions and 4-centred heads. Lounge: moulded ceiling cornice; C18 niche with panelled cupboard
under, 3 scalloped shelves over in frame with fluted Doric pilasters, moulded semi-circular head
with fluted keystone; all in moulded outer architrave. Dining room: principal beam moulded with
hollow chamfers and 3 roll moulds on underside, supported on the moulded top of a post or bracket
just visible. The house may have originally been the manor house of the Manor of Strode.
