North portal to canal tunnel. 1794-1801 with C20 alterations. Benjamin Outram and Thomas
Brown engineers. Coursed millstone grit, ashlar band, coping and voussoirs. Almost round headed
arch - slight skew. Cobbled access up to Hyde Road at North portal. The interior has C20 cement
rendering to tunnel vault and the cobbled towpath has been replaced with concrete: steel rails.
NB Tunnel goes under Hyde road necessitating concrete embanking/buttressing adjacent to portal.
This is one of three original tunnels on the Peak Forest canal and it is 176 yds in length.
South portal is listed separately.
