Royal Arms of Queen Victoria, tympanum over chancel arch. Probably dating from the church restoration of 1862-4. The Lion and Unicorn are supporting a disc, not a shield. In heraldry ladies are not usually expected to bear weapons. Quarterly 1 and 4 the gold Lions passant on red for England, 2 a red Lion rampant on gold for Scotland and 3 a silver stringed gold Harp on blue for Ireland. The faces of the lions, the proudly male supporters and the very female harp, say to me that this may have been painted over a much earlier Royal Arms, preserving much of its style. (Photo Oct 2007).
