Peter's Churchyard

GV II
Mausoleum of 1870, designed by William Burges. Large rectangular memorial in
stone and inlaid marble decoration, in free version of Sicilian Romanesque
style. Rests on beaded plinth with undulate frieze running below and above
main panels, then ogee cornice and flat slab top. Central cartouche in each
side, with a cherub in three-quarter relief supporting an ornate scrolled
console at each end of the long sides. Various inscriptions to members of the
Magniac family of Colworth House. Protected by possibly later hipped red clay
tile roof supported on eight wooden bracketed posts with end braces. Set on
much larger limestone-edged plinth. J Mordaunt Crook, William Burges and the
High Victorian Dream (1981) p153-4, 373, 432.
