23.1.61 The Grotto

Grotto. Circa 1839 for John 6th Duke of Bedford. Random rubble walls of
mixed stone types. Small, single-storeyed octagonal structure. Embattled
parapet with triangular merlons. Pointed-arched openings to alternate sides.
S opening contains part-glazed double doors with ornamental cast iron glazing
bars. W and E openings are without glazing, and alterations to lower part of
walls indicates they may originally have been doorways. Interior: patterned
cobbled floors. Walls and ceiling ornamented with shells, quartz, graphite,
etc. the geological speciments brought from Devon and Cornwall. Ceiling is
domed, with central stalactite.
