Onion drying shed
approx. 20 metres SE of
Waterloo Farmhouse

GV II

Onion drying shed. Early Cl9, but apparently reusing some earlier timbers.
Timber framed construction, clad in wood slatting, with weatherboarding to
gable ends. Thatched roof. Long low structure oriented W-E, doors all to N
elevation. Divided into 2 parts, 4 bays to W, 5 bays to E. Clasped purlin
roof structure. Apart from re-used pieces, timbers are machine cut but
substantial and of high quality. Curved braces to all main posts and wood-
pegged joints. Wood slat floor raised approximately half metre from ground.
Catslide roof to S elevation, where ground banks up, producing sheltered
unused space, probably to provide weather protection at same time as allowing
for air circulation. A fine example of an agricultural building type peculiar
to this market gardening area of the country.
