Church of Saint Guthlac
GV
II*
Parish church. A C15 reworking of an older building, itself reworked in later
periods. Mixture of coursed limestone and cobbles, some ashlar dressings,
with red brick repairs (including some brick buttresses). Low-pitched slate
roofs, that to tower hipped. Chancel, nave, W tower. Chancel: apparently of
re-used C15 masonry. 3-light E window has wooden head and mullions, red brick
cambered arch and C15 jambs. N elevation has small doorway with cambered head
and single-light with pointed head. Nave: C15, the thinner N wall probably of
later date. 2 large S windows of 3 lights with 3-centred heads. 2 N windows
are later copies of these. W tower: reworked C15. Thought possibly to have
been central tower of earlier cruciform church, with chancel in place of
present nave and transept to S served by large archway (now blocked). 2
stages. N elevation lower stage has doorway blocked with red brick, this
lower stage itself-apparently a rebuilding. W elevation has 2-light pointed
window to lower stage, with small single light to top stage. S elevation has
fairly small pointed arched doorway within large blocked C15 pointed archway.
Top stage has small single light. Interior: rather plain. C19 roofs re-use
some old timbers. 2 image brackets and cinquefoiled piscina in chancel,
probably reset. Nave retains some C15 pews. Also C19 box pews and 2 decker
pulpit with reading desk. Octagonal font without pedestal.
