L-shaped wing of C15 origin restored by R C Carpenter. Includes former
Abbey kitchen with projecting chimney at north end of north-south wing;
chimney has built into it 4 cusped panels with carvings of symbols of the
Evangelists. At west end of north face in west part of large gabled bay,
original doorway with 2 small niches above, flanked by small buttresses.
Above it, a late medieval 4-light 2-tier window with 4-centred heads to
lights; in east part of gable, a splayed bay with moulded cornice and gargoyles
and windows of one or two cinquefoiled lights with labels. To east of
this, and to west of chimney wing, lower windows transomed. Chimney wing
projects north at east end with two window bays in west wall, which also
has gable over. East face of block has doorway at left hand end and 3
window bays to north; stone-mullioned windows with gables above upper windows.
2 window bays adjoin east end of chapel with small gables over upper windows.
To right hand, wider gabled bay with one 2-light window above and below
and, to left hand, a single light window.
The following buildings of Sherborne School surround the greens immediately
to the north of the Abbey Church of St Mary and form a group with themselves
and with the Abbey Church of St Mary.
