6/148 The Old Rectory

House formerly rectory. Dates to 1828 according to documentary evidence. Stucco
joint-lined stone walls. Shallow pitched hipped roof with overhanging eaves
Brick axial stack and rendered brick stack at left-hand end.
Plan: double depth plan, 2 rooms wide but not quite symmetrical plan. The 2
principal rooms are on the right-hand side at front and back. To the rear at the
left-hand side was the kitchen. The front door opened into an entrance hall which apparently occupied the whole of that side of the house, although it has now been partitioned off. Behind it is a stairhall. Set back from the left-hand end of the house is a small service wing containing dairy, pantry, etc.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Not quite symmetrical 2 window front with the 1st floor
right-hand window blind. Original or slightly later C19 marginal-paned sash
windows. very large on the ground floor, with short horns. Original 6-panelled
doors to left of centre in roundheaded opening with semi-circular fanlight.
Symmetrical 3 window garden front to right end of house with identical window.
Small lower service wing set back from left-hand end with an 8-pane C19 sash
window on the 1st floor and later C19 leanto in front.
Interior: panelled shutters and 6-panelled doors. The 2 principal rooms have
original marble chimneypieces with roundels in the corners. Open well staircase
with cut string, carved tread ends, stick balusters and column newels.
