6/140 Barn approximately 30m. to the
north-east of Court Barton
G.V. II *
Threshing barn. Circa late C16 or early C17. Slatestone rubble walls with a
little cob at the top in places. Corrugated iron roof hipped at lower end and
half-hipped at higher end.
Plan: Large rectangular plan, 14 bays long, apparently with 2 threshing floors,
one at centre of barn and one at lower end. C18 or C19 leanto built in front of
both long walls.
Exterior: single storey. Western elevation has a leanto built along the centre
of it and incorporating a porch to the wide cart entrance at its left-hand end.
At lower end is another cart entrance. Rear elevation has outshuts along its
length.
Interior: original roof survives over higher, left-hand, end of barn and consists of very substantial principal rafters, some slightly curved at the feet and one with a curving strut morticed onto the foot of the principal and extending partly down the walls. Morticed apex and threaded purlins. Original cellars have gone but there is evidence of halved and dovetailed collars on the principals. At the lower end of the barn the roof timbers were replaced probably in the C18.
This is an important barn, of very large dimensions for Devon and obviously of an
early date. It is set in one of the few unspoilt farmsteads in the area.
