Description

DARTINGTON

SX76SE Barn Immediately North
1/95 of Higher Allerton

GV II

Barn. C17 altered in circa early Cl9. Local limestone rubble and cob upper
part of walls. Corrugated asbestos sheet roof with gabled ends. The roof
continues down over a canopy across the front. Bitumenized slurried slate
roof over the lean-to.
Plan: Rectangular plan barn with a loading door at the right hand gable
end. The floor seems to have been inserted later to form a bank barn. the
barn and granary above have access from a later rear doorway. On the
ground floor a cowhouse or roothouse and probably a cartshed and a later
lean-to, probably a cleaving shed on the front and at the left end. the
barn adjoins the stables (qv) which is situated to the right.
Exterior: Front: Doorway to the right with keeping hole recess in one
jamb; cart-shed doorway to right of centre and external stone stairs to
left under the canopy which is formed as a deep eaves by the main roof
continuing down; under the stairs a dog shelter. Lean-to cleaving shed to
the left of front and around the left end; it was originally an open-
fronted cart shed.
At the back a wide barn doorway to right of centre with chamfered frame,
its lintel replaced and old plank doors. A shoot possibly to a root house
at ground level on the right.
Roof: 7-bay roof with 6 trusses; straight principal rafters with morticed
ridge, dovetail lap jointed cranked collars, threaded diagonal ridge-piece
and threaded purlins. The whole roof entirely intact except for the common
rafters which have been replaced. The feet of the principals are dovetail
lap-jointed into wall posts of uncertain length because they are concealed
in the walls, but where the rear doorway has been widened the dovetail
joint is exposed.
