6/67 pair of Limekilns at
Grid Reference 833 564
II
Pair of adjoining limekilns. Circa late C19, extended in circa early to
mid C19. Local slate rubble. Flat front with two arched openings
(swallows), the right hand is probably the original and has a pointed arch,
the top corbel of which has collapsed. The left hand is a larger round
arch with dressed slate voussoir. Both have stoking holes at the back of
the openings. There is a straight masonry joint immediately to the left of
the right hand kiln.
The kilns are built into the bank for top loading from the higher ground
level at the back. The kilns have been infilled with earth and rubble.
Including wall in front enclosing small area with opening to left, opposite
left hand arch; the wall to the right has partly collapsed.
The kilns are situated on the shore of Bow Creek, a tributary of the River
Dart.
