MODBURY -
SX 65 SE
2/46 Higher Spriddlescombe
Farmhouse and barn

- II

Farmhouse with attached barn. Probably C17 origins, but extended and much modi-
fied in late C19. Mainly rendered rubble, but barn is exposed rubble, with a
slate-hung gable; slate roofs. Plan may have been in longhouse form; set in
part across a slope with entrance from south, now internal and giving access to
Victorian extension; entrance now in lean-to extension on north end. Barn, at
right angles, to east, formerly accessible from stair within farmhouse, to upper
level of barn. Main front in 2 storeys, 3 windows; 4-pane sashes above two
large square bays, joined by glazed frontage and part-glazed door, all under
hipped lean-to roof. At first floor a further, small, 4-pane sash and small
casement, low left. Roof hipped on return angle to barn, two small square
stacks. Entrance front has part-glazed C20 door under pent hood, 2 small square
lights at eaves, and 2-light casement left of door. Interior has back-to-back
open fireplaces at north end, much modified, some C19 doors, grand late
victorian pine stair. Barn has half-hipped roofs in 2 storeys, with 2 large
loading openings at first floor, plank doors, above smaller ground floor
openings. An irregular flight of stone steps gives entry to top end, and upper
end has door at first floor access from raised ground level. Throughway in
shippon. Roof is 6 + two ½-bays, scissors and collar construction.
