Brooke House (formerly
25.1.67 listed as Brook House)

GV II

House, now Residential Home. Early C18. Coursed and squared thin-bedded
granite, rendered gable return, left, steep-pitched hipped slate roof.
Symmetrical 5-bay front but set across steep slope, giving two storeys left and
3 storeys right. Lower floor, right, has C20 casement in original opening and a
6-panel door with hood on brackets; at ground and first floors are 12-pane,
sashes to moulded flush, architraves, stone cills. At ground floor with stone
voussoirs and keystone under plain string course, and at first floor to coved
cornice. Central 6-panel door under square overlight with radial fanlight in
doorcase with slender Doric half-columns and full entablature with segmental
pediment, all set to flight of 8 granite steps with simple iron rail balustrade,
and a stepped platform to the main street pavement. At back a hipped stair
turret, incorporated in later extensions, and some upvc sashes, and two small
raking dormers. Small stack. Interior: stick stair with mahogany handrail
through large elliptical arched opening to central hall; top flight of stair, to
roof space, retains the C18 turned balusters. Simple A-frame roof. Many good
C18 panelled doors. The extra bay on the corner of New Street, now part of this
property, is not of special interest.
