BISHOP'S NYMPTON
Rock Cottage
GV
II
Small cottage. Probably C17, rear wing may be a later addition. Colourwashed
rendered cob and stone rubble; corrugated asbestos roof, gabled at ends (thatched
until at least 1960, old list description); right end stack, shared at one time with
Hills View (q.v.) adjoining at right.
Plan: L plan, possibly once a single cell cottage with a 1 room plan rear right wing
which may be later. The room at the front, facing the road, has an entrance to the
left, away from the stack and a stair in the rear left corner, partitioned off from
the room. A small single-storey lean-to, perhaps a fuel store, adjoins at the left
end.
Exterior: Facing the main road through the village but set back from it, like Hills
View, with a small garden in front. 2 storeys. Asymmerical 1 window front with a
C19 or early C20 plank front door to the left with a porch hood, a 6-pane fixed
window to the right and a C20 first floor 2-light timber casement.
Interior: Front room only inspected: a deeply chamfered axial beam indicates a C17
date, fireplace C20 but probably concealing earlier jambs and lintel.
One of a cluster of early houses at the south end of the village.
