House. C17 or earlier origins; C19 extension. Colourwashed and rendered, probably
stone rubble; slate roof, gabled at ends; end stacks to C19 addition, massive stack
with shaft replaced by metal pipe to earlier block.
Plan: Symmetrical plan to the C19 block at the left end which consists of 2 principal
rooms, one on either side of a passage containing the stair. A short rear wing,
gabled to the rear, and a rear lean-to contain service rooms, a stair and an axial
passage linking this block to the earlier house at the right. The earlier house
consists of 2 rooms, the left one heated, and has been subdivided into smaller rooms
on the ground floor.
Exterior: 2 storeys and attic to the left, 2 storeys to the right. 3-bay front to the
C19 block with a central panelled front door with a rectangular fanlight and a flat
porch canopy on moulded brackets. Tall 2-light casements flank the front door,
timber sashes with glazing bars to first floor, 2 gabled full dormers to attic. 4
window front to adjoining block approximately in centre, has a lower roofline, front
door approximately in centre, fenestration of timber casements with glazing bars.
Interior: The older part of the house is of jointed cruck construction and preserves
one jointed cruck truss (apex inaccessible at time of survey) over the left hand room
and a framed partition above an incomplete section of plank and muntin screen between
the 2 rooms. Chamfered axial beam to (sub-divided) right hand room; chamfered
scroll-stopped cross beam to left hand room. The massive fireplace is partly blocked
but an early lintel and jambs may survive. The C19 block has co-eval chimneypieces
and iron grates to the first floor; C18 2-panel doors may be re-used or may survive
from an earlier phase of extension.
