6.2.87 II
Farmhouse, disused at time of survey (1986). Circa late C16 with mid C17 alterations
and C19 or C20 fenestration and re-roofing. Rendered stone rubble and cob; slate
roof, gabled at ends; end stacks, rear lateral stack.
Plan: The late C16 plan was probably a 3 room and cross or through passage
arrangement; lower end to the left with a stair inserted at the rear of the passage
in the late C17.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 4 window front, rather overgrown at time of
survey. Front door to left of centre with a C19 flat porch canopy on posts; C19 or
C20 casement windows with glazing bars, most of the glazing missing.
Interior: Unexpectedly rich in C16 and C17 carpentry and joinery. The hall has
richly moulded cross beams and screens at both lower and higher ends, the higher end
screen with moulded muntins, a moulded head beam and a doorway to the inner room with
a doorframe with a cranked head. The lower end screen also has a cambered doorframe.
The inner room has a deeply-chamfered plastered over cross beam with fragments of a
moulded plaster cornice. Both inner room and hall have C20 fireplaces, probably
concealing earlier lintels and jambs. The lower end room has a plank and muntin
screen to the passage with a doorframe with a cambered head; a hollow-chamfered step-
stopped cross beam and an open fireplace with a chamfered timber lintel. Good circa
mid/late C17 dog-leg stair with turned balusters to rear of passage.
Roofspace: Not inspected but roof timbers probably C19 or C20.
