Barn. Circa late C17 with C19 outshuts. Plastered cob with sedimentary stone
rubble plinth. Some of the walls at the west end have been rebuilt in stone
rubble. Thatched roof with hipped left hand (west) end and half-hipped right
hand end. Part of the roof at the right hand end has collapsed (at time of
survey 1988).
Plan: Long range built into steeply sloping site, the lower end to the west
(left). It has 2 threshing floors, one to right of centre and the other towards
the lower left end. Late C19 outshuts on front to left of centre and at the
rear.
Exterior: At the front the 2 cart-entrances have their original chamfered
doorframes with mason's mitres the chamfers ogee-stopped at the centre of the
lintel for the central post; old plank doors; there is the remains of the
thatched canopy over the right hand cart-entrance. There are some ventilation
slits with stone surrounds high up in the front and back walls and 2 in the
right hand (east) gable end have timber lining. At the front and rear late C19
stone rubble outskirts.
Interior: The original cob sections of the walls are plastered. Over three
quarters of the original roof survives in a complete state but about 4 bays
towards the west end has fallen in. The roof has straight principal rafters set
in the wall tops on pads, the apexes mortice and tenon jointed and the collars
lapped and pegged to the face of the principals. The 3 tiers of purlins are set
on the backs of the principals and the diagonal ridgepiece is supported in the
crutch formed by the projecting tenon of the apex joint. Most of the common
rafters and battens are intact.
