Description

UPLOWMAN WHITNAGE
ST Ol NW
4/197
- No 1 Locks Cottage

GV II
Cottage. Probably C18, modernised in the mid C19. Plastered stone rubble (exposed
west end), maybe with some cob; stone rubble stack topped with late C18 - early
C19 brick; that roof. Plan: 2-room plan cottage built down quite a steep hill-
slope built along the road facing north-north-west, say north. There is a small
unheated room uphill to left (east) and larger heated room at the right end with
a gable-end stack. The doorway is to rear into an entrance lobby with the staircase
between the 2 rooms. Two storeys. Exterior: irregular fenestration, one each
floor on the front and a 2-window rear, all C20 casements with glazing bars. Rear
doorway contains a C20 door and porch. Roof is gable-ended to right and to left
it runs continuously over the adjoining Locks Cottage (qv). Interior: has a small
amount of plain carpentry detail showing. The large room has a large stone rubble
fireplace with soffit-chamfered oak lintel. There is no sign of a ceiling beam
here. Roof not inspected although the bases of straight principals from A-frame
trusses show on the first floor. All the joinery detail is C20. No 1, Locks
Cottage, is one of a group of attractive listed buildings in the hamlet of Whitnage.
It is a small cottage built onto the end of Locks Cottage (qv). The slope is such
that the ground floor room of Locks Cottage adjoints the first floor of No 1.
