2 cottages. Mid-late Cl7. Plastered stone rubble, maybe with some cob; stone
rubble stacks topped with C20 brick; thatch roof.
Plan: pair of cottages built along the lane facing north. Whitnage Chart is the
left (eastern) cottage. It has a 2-room plan. The right room is the larger and it
has an axial stack backing onto the unheated left room. A newel stair rises
alongside the fireplace. C20 service outshot to rear of the left room. Shapcott
Cottage is the right (western) cottage. It has a 1-room plan with a gable-end
stack. Although Shapcott Cottage was unavailable for inspection at the time of this
survey it seems likely that it and the main room of Whithage Chart are a pair of
contemporary 1-room plan of cottages, each a mirror plan of the other. The second
room of Whitnage Chart looks contemporary but might have been an agricultural or
storage room. 2 storeys.
Exterior: overall irregular 3-window front. All 3 first floor windows and the
ground floor one at the right end are original oak-framed windows with flat-faced
mullions. They contain rectangular panes of leaded glass and the iron casements
have ornate wrought iron casements. The other windows are C20 casements with
glazing bars. The cottage doorways are next to each other and both contain C20
part-glazed doors. The roof is gable-ended.
Interior: only Whitnage Chart was available for inspection at the time of this
survey. In the main room the oak lintel of the stone rubble fireplace and the axial
beam are both soffit-chamfered with scroll stops. The second room has an unstopped
soffit-chamfered axial beam. The roofspace is inaccessible althought the bases of
straight principles show, their scantling large enough to indicate that the roof
retains its original Cl7 A-frame trusses.
