Cottage, former barn. C17, possibly earlier, converted to domestic use circa 1980.
Large blocks of granite ashlar with some granite stone rubble patching; thatch roof.
Plan: long low building built across the hillslope on a north-south axis. It is now
a 3-room plan cottage but was originally a threshing barn open to the roof and open
from end to end with large nearly central opposing doorways in the long walls (now
blocked). Since 1980 it is single storey with attics.
Exterior: all the windows (casements with leaded glass above an upper transom) and
doorways were put there circa 1980. The west front contains 2 doorways and a
casement window at the left end. The window is blocking a small doorway and the
present doorway to right of it is blocking a larger original. Another casement
window is the north end and 2 more on the east side. East side also has a large
blocked doorway and a small slit window near left end. Roof has half-hipped end.
Interior: is wholly the result of the circa 1980 conversion. Only the roof structure
is older. It is C17 and comprises a series of A-frame trusses with pegged lap-
jointed collars and carpenters' assembly marks.
This former barn has structural similarities with nearby Court Cottage (q.v.) which
is dated 1651. It is one of a varied group of listed buildings which make up the
hamlet of Thorn.
