3/79 Fishpond approximately 50
- metres north-east of Waye Barton
GV II
Fishpond. Probably C17, thought by some to be medieval. Lined with large grade
granite rubble with large roughly dressed granite slabs as coping. Large fishpond
shaped as a figure of eight and approximately 55m from end to end. It is terraced
into a north-east facing slope and therefore the outer bank drops sharply to the
north-east. It is fed by 2 small streams, one into each end. On the outer bank
there is a granite ashlar trough as an overflow channel and on the bed below it is
the granite-lined sump through the bank.
The building of this fishpond, whatever its precise date, was a major undertaking and
it was deliberately built to look attractive.
