Small summerhouse alongside the lake. 1899-1905 by Thomas Mawson. Granite rubble
walls using chosen pieces to produce a crazy paving effect, granite ashlar quoins
and detail; thatch roof.
Plan and description: small summerhouse facing the lake to the west. It is
rectangular in plan with canted corners and open front. Roof over open front
supported on monolithic granite posts with simple classical caps. The post sections
are shaped with 5 uneven sides to accommodate their corner positions. The roof is
hipped each end. Inside the back wall is lined with narrow full height fielded oak
panelling.
This summerhouse is part of an extensive landscaping scheme conceived by Mawson to go with the rebuilding of Wood House. The landscaping of the nearby lake was an
important component of the scheme. Mawson himself considered the whole scheme as
one of his major achievements.
