Description

HALBERTON BRITHEM BOTTOM
ST 01 SW
2/183
- Higher Coombe Farmhouse including
- adjacent barns and linhay
II
Farmhouse. C17 with later alterations. Cob, stone plinth, plastered, with 2 stone
rear wings, all under gabled-end synthetic slate roof. Possibly a former 3-room,
through-passage plan with 2 later C17 rear wings which appear to have been added at
the same time. Left hand end stack, formerly external; rear (formerly possibly
lateral) stack now at junction of a wing and main range; lateral internal stack to
east wing. 2-storeys.
Front: (i.e. facing garden and away from roadside): 4-window range, 4-light early
C19 casement window above 8 leaded panes per light, all except 1 light fixed; ground
floor: left hand window of 6 bays, C19 casement, 8-panes per light, 1 light with
stanchion; C19 four-light window to right of wide gabled C20 porch (with three 3-
light windows and side door); C20 window to right. The C19 casements appear to fill
the original C17 embrasures.
Rear: 4-light window to each floor of end elevation of wings with the exception of
ground floor window of right-hand (west) wing which is of 5 (and was originally of
10) lights. Casements appear to be early C19 although some of the surrounds may be
original; 8 leaded panes per light. Left-hand (east) wing with wide panelled door,
recessed.
Interior: end fireplace (renewed) with newel staircase and smoking chamber built
into flanking recesses; chamfered lintel with scroll stop and bar; back oven
(blocked); this room has 3 deeply chamfered cross beams. Roofs (where inspected)
are C19; A-profile. The adjacent farmbuildings (2 storeyed barn with granary, and a
linhay) arranged around the small farmyard, may incorporate C17 work, and are
included in this listing.
