On Whitmonday 9th June 1549, the people of the village insisted that the priest should go back to the old form of service for the Mass, which he did. After the service the 'Church Ale' was held in the Church House. There was discussion of the new service and all voiced their objections to the new form. Four gentry arrived to restore order but withdrew. William Hellyons tried to deter the crowd but was killed by a bill hook on the steps. The men then joined the Cornish in rebellion.
