C18. The only pre-C19 building on the property, rectangular, stone, now
with machine tile roof. Adapted as dwelling. Formerly with old timber
lintols to openings. Some former pigeon-holes remain. Burrough House,
the ancient manor house originally on this site was the home of Stephen
and William Burrough, explorer and Vice-Admiral respectively, in Elizabethan
times. Later the seat of the Leighs. Kingsley's probably mythical character,
Amyas Leigh was supposed to have lived here. Later the home of C18 Admiral
Barton. The house was entirely rebuilt in 1868, later divided into 2
properties, Burrough House and Burrough Farm.
