Farmhouse. Early C16 with C17 alterations and C19 addition. Plastered cob walls.
Thatch roof gabled to left end, hipped to right. Projecting rendered rubble stack
at left gable end with brick shaft, rendered rubble axial stack and one at right
end, both with brick shafts.
Plan: 3-room-and-through-passage plan, lower end to the right. Hall stack backs
onto the passage but this was inserted into an open hall which formerly had a
central hearth. The lower end was also probably open to the roof but it is unclear
whether the inner room was too. The insertion of the stack and ceilings was
probably completed by the early C17. C19 outbuilding added at right-hand end was
converted to domestic accommodation in later C20 and some time in the C20 the
partition between the hall and inner room was removed.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 4-window front of late C20 2-light casements,
that on the ground floor to left of centre is in small projection. C20 plank door
to centre under slate doorhood. Slightly projecting single storey addition at
right-hand end.
Interior: hall fireplace has chamfered wooden lintel with hollow step stops.
Similarly stopped deep chamfered cross beam. To lower side of passage is plank and
muntin screen with chamfered muntin and mason's mitres to the headbeam. Lower room
has heavy chamfered ceiling beams.
One cruck blade survives at the rear over the passage with no joint visible.
According to the owner when the house was recently thatched the thatch commented on
the smoke-blackening of the timbers at the lower end but very limited roof access
meant that this could not be confirmed at the time of inspection.
