Terrace of 21 houses and attached railings. c1834, shown as
laid out on Merrett's Map of 1834. Builders: Robert Todd and
William Prosser, probably to designs by John Forbes. Stucco
over brick with concealed roof and iron area railings, window
boxes and balconies.
PLAN: double-depth plan with side staircase and with
3-lower-storey service range to rear. Houses are slightly
stepped uphill with ramped entablature.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys on basement, 3 windows per house. Stucco
detailing includes horizontal rustication to ground floor
surmounted by tall Doric pilasters through first- and
second-floors between windows to every alternate house,
architrave, frieze and cornice with blocking course; tooled
architraves to first-floor windows, with cornices to centre
windows to Nos 17, 19 and each following alternate house.
Mainly 6/6 sashes (where original), taller to first floor, in
plain reveals and with sills to ground and second floors.
Basement has 8/8 sashes where original. Entrances to right and
left, flights of roll-edged steps to 3-panel doors with
overlights with glazing bars recessed in elliptically-arched
openings; Nos 14 and 15 now share a central entrance. Left
return has 3 first-floor windows: 6/6 sashes where original;
stucco detailing continues from front facade. Rear: 6/6 and
8/8 sashes.
INTERIOR: many retain original features including dogleg
staircases with stick and rod-and-bobbin balusters and
wreathed handrail. Embellished cornices with varied designs,
varying in the level of embellishment. No.24 has ceiling
frieze with grapes, egg-and-dart cornice to front ground-floor
room, rear room has egg-and-dart frieze and cornice
embellished with daisies; first floor has tulip frieze and
deep cornice with daisies and further frieze with flowers,
ceiling rose and shutters.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: railings to sides of steps have
embellished rods; area railings across fronts have X-motif;
first-floor balustrade has Carron Company
double-heart-and-anthemion motif. Ground floor window boxes to
No.14. No.24 has gryphon boot scraper.
