SY 08 NW WOODBURY WOODBURY SALTERTON (west side)
2/169 Nos. 1, 2 & 3 School Cottages

- II
Row of 3 cottages. Circa 1600. Roughcast cob on stone footings with much brick
patching and window surrounds; brick outshut to rear. Gabled-end slate roof.
Originally a 3-room, through-passage plan house, the service end to the left of the
passage; tall axial stack backs onto passage; left-hand end stack with side oven
heats service end. Later stacks (axial to inner room, and an end stack to a higher
end extension) were presumably inserted when the house was converted into a row of
cottages. One early newel stair survives to the rear of the service-end end stack.
2 storeys.
Front: 6 window range; 6 windows to both floors, all of 2 lights, 4 of the
casements look to be C19, 3 doors to cottages.
Rear: outshut under catslide; C20 windows, including a 2-light dormer.
Interior: service-end cross ceiling beam with hollow step stops; fireplace with
chamfered and stopped lintel. The newel appears to be integral. Passage with lath
and plaster partitions. Deeply chamfered cross beam to hall, with hollow step
stops.
Roof: 2 jointed crucks, morticed and pegged at collar and apex, clean. 2 straight
principals over later higher-end extension.
