2/148 Nutt's Farmhouse with former barn
- (now a dwelling) to rear
- II
Detached house, formerly a farmhouse, with a former barn (now a dwelling) to rear.
Early C16 with later alterations and extensions; the barn probably C17 or early
C18. Roughcast cob on stone footings; gabled-end thatched roof; the barn with much
brick patching and gabled-end corrugated iron roof. The house was originally a 3-
room through-passage plan, the higher end to the right of the passage; each room
was of one unit, the hall open to the roof; it was extended to both the higher and
lower ends in the C17, at which time the hall was probably floored and the main
stack inserted. 2 storeys.
Front: the service-end extension has no windows at all and may originally have been
a barn or shippon; otherwise a 3-window range; 1st floor with 2- and 3-light
casement windows, the casements possibly C18 with large L-hinges; similar casements
to ground floor service end room and hall; C20, 2-light window to inner room. Bake
oven bulge with small window to right.
Rear: 2 half dormers; curved stair turret to rear of hall stack; 3 rear doors, one
opposing front entrance to passage, with leanto porch. 2 small casement windows.
Interior: plank and muntin screen to left of passage, with carpenter's mitres,
chamfered and stopped to passage side; fragments of higher-end passage screen
between axial stack and rear wall. Hall with 2 deeply chamfered, unstopped cross
ceiling beams. Hall fireplace with massive chamfered lintel. Between hall and
inner room is a much reinforced bressumer with mortices to receive screen (now
missing).
Roof: 2 jointed crucks (from medieval building phase), one above lower passage
screen, the other over hall, possibly marking the original division between hall
and inner room before extension in C17. The hall cruck is lightly sooted to higher
end only, suggesting inner room always floored. Some blackened rafters, battening
and thatch above hall. Service end extension with 3 C17 jointed crucks, each with
carpenter's assembly marks. The barn, originally a threshing barn, although now
much altered, retains its original roof construction with 4 roughly hewn jointed
crucks, pegged, the collars halved. Nutt's Farm still retains much of its medieval
tenement boundaries to the rear.
