House, now flats, and attached wall, gateway and gate. c1834
with additions and alterations including C20 infill.
Architects RW and C Jearrad. Ashlar over brick with tile roof
and ashlar lateral stack to main range which breaks forwards
to full height and rear stacks. Tudor Gothic style. Irregular
U-plan originally, now with infill.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys, main range with attic, 3 bays, range to
right with 2 bays. Main range: ground-floor loggia has
4-centred arches, now partly infilled. Entrance within, 2
part-glazed panelled doors to angle .First floor has two
2-light mullion windows, that to left blocked, otherwise 1/1
sashes and 2-light blind window with ogeed hoodmould and
facestops to projecting stack, 'ABANCOURT' above in Gothic
script. Attic has blind window with hoodmould to stack. Range
to right has projecting gabled range to front with replacement
bow window to ground floor and 3-light mullion window with 1/1
sashes and hoodmould; kneelers. All openings in chamfered
surrounds. To left gable end a 2-storey bay.
Garden facade: 2 storeys, 5 first-floor windows, the 2 windows
to left have gables over. From left ground floor has two
4-light mullion and transom windows with chamfered surrounds
and hoodmoulds; three 2-light mullion and transom windows;
casements. First floor has two 3-light mullion windows with
shields above and hoodmoulds; three 2-light mullion windows;
all 1/1 sashes in chamfered surrounds.
INTERIOR: open-well staircase with iron alternately
embellished and stick balusters, upper hall has oval skylight;
original joinery includes 6-panel doors; plasterwork includes
egg-and-dart cornices.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: walls to right for approx 5m with
chamfered copings, ramped up to end, and to left for approx 8m
to pedestrian gateway with 2 openings; between them is an
entrance to loggia: double 8-panel studded doors, in
4-centred, chamfered architrave, cavetto-moulded cornice and
low parapet with copings.
HISTORICAL NOTE: part of the Lansdown development initiated by
Pearson Thompson.
Built together with Rokeby Home, Malvern Place (qv), the
garden facades form a continuous design.
