3/34 The Vicarage including
garden boundary wall and
gate-piers to South and
South east
II
Vicarage. Circa 1860. Stuccoed, probably stone rubble. Welsh slate roof; the gable
ends have ornate pierced wooden bargeboards and pendants, their finials having been
cut off. Rendered stacks with moulded cornices and louvred yellow clay pots. Plan:
Double depth plan. Two principal front rooms on the east with a central entrance
between. The internal arrangement is uncertain but there is probably a third
principal room to the rear left (south west) and therefore the service rooms would
be in the rear right hand corner of the house. The style is a combination of
picturesque Tudor Gothic with Italianate details. Exterior: 2 storeys and attic.
Symmetrical 3-bay east front, the wider outer bays are gabled and advanced slightly
and the narrow centre bay is recessed. Moulded string-course at first floor window
sill level. To left and right canted bays with console brackets to the cornices
and panelled surrounds to the windows. On the first floor round-headed windows
paved to right and left and single light at centre, each with moulded extrados on
brackets and small round-headed single-light attic windows with bracketed sills
in gables above. Central doorway with a rendered porch, its gable with similar
bargeboards to the main gables, similar door-head as the first floor windows. The
left hand side is asymmetrical with a gable to left, similar bargeboards and windows
as to the front gables. The windows are the original large 4-pane sashes and the
attic windows are casements. The right hand side and rear elevations were not
inspected. Interior not inspected but might contain interesting features such
as chimney pieces and original joinery including the staircase etc. Including garden
boundary wall and gate-piers to south and south east. Probably contemporary with
the house. The wall is built of flint with bands of red brick and rustic flint
capping ramped up to higher level at left hand end and curved at the right hand
corner. The wall is also curved into the carriage gateway near the right hand end
where there are 2 large stuccoed gate-piers square on plan, with large moulded
caps surmounted by festooned urns.
