5/21 Manor House
- II
House. C16 or earlier origins. C17-C18 alterations include insertion of
axial stack, first floor, encasing and rebuilding. Mid C19 alterations
include raising of main range, new rear wing, and stable/granary range to
right. C20 renovations. Timber-framing, chalk and ironstone rubble walling
to central section, brick to remainder. Colour-washed throughout. Pantile
roof. Gable end to road. T-shaped on plan: 3 rooms with entrance-hall
(formerly lobby-entry) to left, single-room wing to rear right and single-
room extension in former stable/granary to right. 1 bay of timber framing
visible. 2 storeys, 3 first-floor windows, with lower 2-storey single-
window addition to right. Rubble section to centre with brick patching.
Late C19 - early C20 projecting enclosed flat-roofed brick porch with 6-
fielded-panel door beneath plain fanlight in round-arched panelled reveal,
and C20 pilastered doorcase beneath coved cornice. C19 12-pane sashes to
either side in reveals with sills and stucco keyed cambered arches; 3-light
sliding sash to right with glazing bars beneath similar arch. 12-pane
sliding sash to right extension beneath segmental arch. Pair of iron tie-
bar ends to left. First floor: 2-light sliding sash to left with small
panes, 12-pane sliding sash to centre and 6-pane sash to right beneath
segmental arches; 12-pane sliding sash to right extension with lintel at
eaves level. 2 brick courses corbelled-out to left at mid - first floor
window level probably mark position of former wall plate. C19 rebuilt axial
stack and projecting end stack to right with dentilled brick cornices. Left
return has 12-pane ground-floor sash similar to front, first floor 16-pane
and attic 12-pane flush sashes beneath segmental arches. Rear has 5
corbelled-out brick courses to first floor of main range and 16-pane sashes
in flush wood architraves to wing. Interior. Round-arched opening to
passage leading from entrance to rear, cut through former stack in C19.
Exposed timber framing includes sections of central truss to right of stack,
with post and lower section of pegged arch brace in ground floor right
clasping an inserted ledge beam to support the later first floor, and upper
section of post on first floor with a pair of straight braces to a cranked
tie beam, forming a pointed arch with roll-mouldings on underside. Wall to
first floor right has central timber post with down-braces to a tie-beam
above the kitchen wall and up-braces extending into the roofspace to support
a section of re-used wall-plate containing a stop-splayed scarf joint with
sallied butts and face keys of late medieval form; post and braces bear
traces of smoke-blackening. C19 collared and trench-purlin roof. Single-
flight staircase with turned newels and plain balusters dated 1872, the
probable date for much of the C19 re-modelling. An important survival of a
former timber-framed open-hall house.
