1908 by B Parker and R Unwin. House built for Parker's brother Stanley,
a craftsman joiner, and is a major and complete example of Barry Palicer's
best work in the Arts and Crafts idiom. Two storeys and attics with steeply
pitched gables swept down to first floor level on south side. Three windows.
Tiled roof with tall, roughcast stacks. Roughcast walls. Precast-concrete,
mullioned windows with leaded metal casements, whose grouping is reminiscent
of Voysey. Plain entrance. At rear sheltered "stoep" with fitted settle,
a characteristic feature of the "Healthy-Life" movement at Letchworth.
Internally the building was originally open-plan with the fireplace walls
articulating the division between the studio and general living areas.
Plain, unplastered painted brick finishes and exposed ceiling and roof joists.
Good joinery and ironmongery.
