Barn and cartshed. Early C17 barn, early C19 cartshed. Timber frames on
brick sills, dark weatherboarded. Steep pitched roofs, barn thatched up
to 1928, now of corrugated sheeting. A large 6-bays aisled barn facing E
with 3-bays lower open fronted cartshed adjoining on N also facing E,
and 2 projecting gabled porches to the barn in the 2nd and 5th bays from
the N. The latter porch has a gable triangle jettied out and pierced for
a dovecote. Interior of barn not divided by crosswall but floor steps
down in stages from S to N. Barn has heavy jowled arcade posts, long
straight braces to arcade posts and cambered tie-beams. Clasped-purlin
roof with 2 purlins to each slope. Upper-purlin clasped by high collar:
the lower by inclined heavy straight queen-posts widening as they rise.
Aisle-ties to low aisle walls. Thin pole rafters for thatch. Face-halved
bladed scarf joints in arcade plates.
