Old Bell Yard
(20m to NE of
The Post House)

GV II

Barn. C16, shortened at W and extended to E in early C19.
Timber frame dark weatherboarded with steep half-hipped roof now
of corrugated iron. A tall 4-bay barn facing S with double doors
in 2nd bay from W. Older W part has a N aisle, very heavy jowled
posts, curved braces to cambered tie-beams and arcade-plate,
queen-post, clasped-purlin roof and old flat-layed rafters
(separate rafters to the aisle). Upcurved brace from top of
aisle-tie to back of arcade post. Structure of half-hip remains
in roof at E end. C19 E part is not aisled. It has unjowled
posts. Straight braces to tie-beams, and clasped-purlin roof
with inclined queen-struts. An interesting building contrasting
2 periods of construction.
