Former principal gatelodge to Ashridge on abandoned E drive, now a
private house. Late C17 core; elaborated and externally remodelled in
early C19, probably by Jeffry Wyatt, for the Earl of Bridgewater; rear
wing similar style in later C19, N extensions in stages in C20. Timber
frame on plinth faced with York stone slabs with drafted margins. Narrow
red brick infill in herringbone pattern. Steep old red tile roofs.
Similar half timbered effect in all extensions. An irregular T-shaped
building facing E of 2-storeys and a cellar, the oldest part forming the
S half of the cross-bar. This has a 2-storage gabled porch in line with
a late C17 panelled brick internal chimney about a third from S end.
2-storeys canted bay window to right of porch with its own pointed roof,
and short gabled rear projection. Front has heavy cusped bargeboards
with pendants, oriel window on brackets with lattice leading, unlikely
pattern of pegged framing. Base of porch formerly open with traceried
spandrels to curved braces and Portland stone bases to corner posts.
Small pointed window in gable of porch, and 3-lights oriel above present
plank door. Most elaborate treatment to S gable end facing drive with
gable triangle projecting on bull-nosed beams as a deep jetty protecting
a canted oriel window on 1st floor. Gabled open timber porch on ground
floor with traceried gable and curved braces.
